PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Crude oil is generally produced with water in the form of emulsions or dispersions of water droplets in oil. It is necessary to remove water from the oil for economic and operational reasons. Three-phase separator, which is one of the gravitational settling methods, is one of the first stage of production processes for the separation of gas, oil, and water in the petroleum industry. The gravity settling approach requires a large equipment size to achieve effective separation, which is not practicable and economical, and it is especially not convenient for offshore conditions. Therefore, there is a need for a CFD model to modify the design and improve the operation of process equipment. The objectives of this project are:

To develop the CFD model for an oil separator under three angular motion.

To develop the CFD model for an oil separator under three angular motion.

To investigate effects of the three angular motions on the exit pressure, exit mass flow rate, and separation efficiency using 30-year wave data.

BENEFITS

CFD model effectively predicted the hydrodynamic behaviors and oil separation efficiency of the oil separator under offshore operation.
