PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A low temperature furnace (LTF) also known as a tar removal furnace is composed of electrically heated multi-zone slots. Appropriate ventilation of the off-gas emitted from the PAN precursor during carbonization is important for high quality carbon fiber manufacturing. Typically, tar evolved by poor ventilation in the corners and in the top and bottom walls of a furnace deteriorates the quality of the carbon fiber tows. Therefore, there is a need for a CFD model involving a realistic off-gas emission rate in a LTF with multiple moving tows. The objectives of this project are as follows:

To develop a three dimensional (3D) CFD model of a LTF with off-gas emission model

To propose the residence time of the off-gas, dead-zone ratio of gas velocity, and uniformity of temperature as performance criteria of the LTF

To investigate the duct position and propose an optimum duct position
