The challenge

Optimizing the performance of a waste-to-energy incinerator

Micro-One's engineering team set out to raise the efficiency and cut the NOx emissions of the incinerator. That requires optimizing combustion, the NOx removal reactions and heat exchange. Understanding the combustion, flow and reaction behavior is the key to placing the urea injectors where they work best and securing the overall performance.

Basic calculations provide only partial support; a thorough optimization was held back by the lack of detailed insight and by the cost and time limits of physical testing. High-fidelity simulation of the incineration process and virtual testing of the design options were therefore a prerequisite for the success of this project.

The solution

Analyzing the flow and NOx removal behavior in the incinerator with CFD simulation

CFDWAYS deployed STAR-CCM+ to model the whole incinerator with high fidelity. STAR-CCM+ provides the full set of models needed to simulate the complex combustion process accurately. Working closely with Micro-One's engineers, CFDWAYS also built a 1D mathematical model of the incinerator, allowing the NOx removal performance to be compared against the design data.

Combining detailed CFD with the 1D model gave a comprehensive tool for optimizing the incinerator quickly and effectively: it proposes the optimal injection positions under the project's various operating scenarios, securing high performance and minimal emissions.
