Four industry groups, real problems

CFDWAYS focuses on four industry groups. The first three are where the team has delivered projects, validated models and an understanding of how the process is operated. The fourth has the method and the model class and is building its project record.

Group 1

Energy & Utilities

The group with the most CFDWAYS projects in 2022–2025: from desulfurization systems, SNCR and HRSG through to refinery condensers.

  • Thermal power & waste-to-energy — grate combustion chambers, heat distribution, HRSG, waste-heat boilers
  • Oil, gas and refining — condensers, multiphase separators, cracking & distillation
  • Emissions control — SOx removal (dry/wet FGD), NOx removal (SNCR, ozone DeNOx), dust filtration
  • Water & environmental engineering — mixing/contact tanks (RTD, dead zones), settling tanks, bioreactors

Group 2

Process industry

Process equipment is where CFDWAYS has its deepest academic foundation — with international publications on bubble columns, hydrocracking and reforming.

  • Cement, ceramics — kilns, spray-drying systems, cyclones, particle handling
  • Chemicals & petrochemicals — bubble columns, fixed beds, catalytic reactors
  • Separation & mixing equipment — distillation, absorption, agitation
  • Pumps, fans, drying & cooling towers — operating points, pressure losses

Group 3

HVAC & Buildings

Validating ventilation and comfort design before construction — the cost of simulation is far below the cost of fixing a building.

  • Thermal comfort — PMV/PPD distribution, locally uncomfortable zones
  • Indoor air quality — CO₂ distribution, ventilation effectiveness
  • Industrial ventilation — car park smoke control, heat rejection
  • Wind loading on buildings — condenser unit placement, virtual wind tunnel

Group 4 · expanding

Advanced technology

The physics in this group (thermal management, multiphase flow, convection) is the same class of problem CFDWAYS has worked on for years in heavy industry, only at a different length scale.

  • Batteries & energy storage — cell-to-cell temperature spread, cooling paths
  • Electronics cooling — heat sinks, thermal paths, hot spots
  • Data centers — cold air bypass, hot air recirculation, failure scenarios
  • New industrial equipment — virtual product development, automated optimization

The projects CFDWAYS has completed and validated are concentrated in the three groups above. For this group, CFDWAYS transfers the method and the class of model validated in those three.

Find projects by outcome or by equipment

Four measurable kinds of outcome, or seven equipment groups with a real model already built.

By outcome

Energy efficiency · Process efficiency · Emissions reduction · Design innovation — the same set of projects, re-sorted by what can be measured.

By equipment

FGD · SNCR · combustion chambers · HRSG · spray drying · separation · HVAC — each equipment group with the approach taken and the results achieved.

Another industry? Same physics

Steel, high-tech agriculture, building materials — CFDWAYS has worked on real problems in these too. Applicability depends on the physics of the problem.
