CFDWAYS at the seminar “Digital transformation in the energy sector: design and lifecycle management solutions for power plants”

A PECC2 seminar with Siemens, ESTEC and CFDWAYS presenting digital transformation, numerical simulation and digital twin solutions for Vietnam's energy sector.

On the morning of 22 July 2025, Power Engineering Consulting JSC 2 (PECC2) held an internal seminar on “Digital transformation in the energy sector: design and lifecycle management solutions for power plants” at the PECC2 Innovation Hub. The event brought together Siemens Digital Industries Software (DI SW), Bien Dong Electrical Automation Technology Co., Ltd. (ESTEC), CFDWAYS ENGINEERING LLC, along with PECC2's management, specialists and engineering team.

The seminar was held to share knowledge, update the audience on advanced technology and propose practical solutions covering the entire life of a power plant, in service of a comprehensive digital transformation of Vietnam's energy sector.

Setting a long-term digitalization vision

Opening the seminar, Mr Tran Huynh Ngoc – Deputy Director of the PECC2 Training and R&D Center – presented PECC2's digital transformation strategy and underlined how well the company's fields of activity match digital solutions capable of covering the whole life of a power plant, from design and construction through to operation and maintenance. PECC2 therefore worked with Siemens DI SW and its partners ESTEC and CFDWAYS to hold this seminar, updating and discussing digital technology in power generation while setting a direction for building the digital capability of its engineering team, in line with company strategy.

Optimizing industrial systems with digital twin technology (xDT)

From simulation to practical application

Mr Tran Van Bay, Director of CFDWAYS, presented his view of the role engineering simulation platforms play in a full digital transformation of the energy sector. He introduced current research and applications of CFD, predictive simulation and digital twins for solving complex engineering problems and optimizing power plant operation, including:

  • NH₃ co-firing research: to cut CO₂ emissions and move toward carbon neutrality, CFDWAYS uses CFD to optimize coal–ammonia (NH₃) co-firing. The technology is being researched and moving toward trials at several thermal power plants in Vietnam, opening up the potential for low-emission power generation in the future.
  • Optimizing dry desulfurization (De-SOx) systems: through detailed CFD, CFDWAYS improves the SOx removal efficiency of the system and reduces its resistance, saving operating cost on the induced-draft fans. These systems have been applied at many power plants in South Korea, opening the way for application in Vietnam to meet new environmental standards.
  • Optimizing heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) performance: by applying CFD to analyze flow and heat transfer, CFDWAYS proposes improvements and new HRSG designs for thermal power plants that raise heat recovery efficiency while making the internal flow more stable, reducing noise and thermal stress risk.

Advanced simulation enables engineers to analyze and predict operating results before implementation, reducing both engineering risk and investment cost.

CFDWAYS argues that a successful digital transformation needs a coherent technology ecosystem, in which engineering simulation models play the core role in forming the digital twin and creating a comprehensive data and analysis foundation across the product life. Connecting design – simulation – operating data lays the groundwork for effective asset lifecycle management, predictive maintenance and optimization of the whole power plant operation.

Simulation technology applied in the energy sector

Digital twins creating value across the product life

Presenting online from Singapore, Mr Siew Pai Oak, Business Development Director for Southeast Asia at Siemens DI SW, spoke about “Digital Transformation Lifecycle Excellence” — an open digital architecture supporting data management across the whole life of a power plant, with practical benefits such as:

  • Higher design and construction productivity.
  • Data linked across project stages.
  • Support for efficient, continuous operation and maintenance.

Continuing the program, Mr Winston Vigil Manuel Raj, Southeast Asia Regional Manager at Siemens DI SW, presented the “Simcenter Executable Digital Twin” technology and its role in the energy sector. He highlighted its ability to simulate, test and control power plant systems in real time, supporting design and operational optimization of systems such as wind turbines, drivetrains, cooling systems and heat pumps. The technology also improves reliability, monitors structural safety, reduces emissions and optimizes cost through operational prediction.

Linking design with intelligent maintenance

Mr Tong Phuoc Thien, Managing Director of ESTEC, gave an overview of integrated Siemens platforms such as gPROMS, COMOS and Mendix/XHQ. These tools support comprehensive data management and create a digital ecosystem connecting departments and engineering units. They also link systems, reduce errors, raise productivity and build the digital twin for predictive maintenance.

Mr Nguyen Tien Dat, Head of Solution Consulting at ESTEC Digital, presented the COMOS MRO – Mobile Worker solution, which supports:

  • Capturing data on site with QR codes, sensors and augmented reality (AR).
  • Creating maintenance orders quickly and tracking equipment accurately.
  • Applying AI and natural language processing to analyze risk, diagnose failures and recommend maintenance.

ESTEC's solution helps power plants move from reactive to proactive maintenance and cut downtime.
